This Pumpkin Spice Trail Mix Recipe is easy to make, but tastes really fancy! The homemade pumpkin spice glazed nuts really elevate this homemade snack mix.

A bowl and a bag of homemade pumpkin spice trail mix. Overlaid text says Pumpkin Spice Homemade Trail Mix.

Just before our fall camping trip, my husband had a request - that I’d design a caffeinated trail mix for him.

I did, and it was FANTASTIC - the perfect snack for long drive days, in particular. A great alternative to just buying Mountain Dew at random gas stations while on the road trip!

That recipe is still coming - and it’ll join the only homemade trail mix recipe I’ve posted so far (S'Mores Trail Mix)... but there are a LOT more coming, too!

As usual, we ended up “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”-ing the whole thing, and ended up designing a bunch of other trail mix recipes - including several fun seasonal / holiday trail mix recipes.

We just had a LOT of fun coming up with our own combinations! Anyway, today it’s all about our new Pumpkin Spice Trail Mix Recipe.

My husband will be the first to tell you that he is a Basic B... err, BRO... when it comes to the pumpkin spice stuff. He can’t get enough of pumpkin spice anything.

Obviously, I’ve got a TON of recipes to indulge his seasonal sweets cravings. Everything from the literal basic - Pumpkin Spice Latte and Pumpkin Chai Latte - to almost basic - Protein Pumpkin Spice Latte... to all kinds of baked goods, like Pumpkin Spice Cookies, Gluten-Free Pumpkin Spice Mini Doughnuts, and Keto Pumpkin Spice Cookies.

That’s not even getting to all the actual pumpkin desserts that also feature that iconic spice mix.

Hell, I even designed a Pumpkin Spice Chicken Jerky recipe for him.

Yes, it may have started as a quasi-joke, but it’s actually shockingly tasty!

    Pumpkin Spice Snack Mix!

Anyway, this delicious snack is one that you can make at home, or over a grill or campfire. While most of the main ingredients are just mixed together, one involves some customization - the pecans are done up in a quick and easy pumpkin spiced glaze.

Sure, it may not technically be a super healthy snack after doing that, but your taste buds will LOVE it!

Anyway, those pumpkin spiced glazed pecans are joined with roasted salted pepitas, butterscotch chips, golden raisins, and more. It’s a sweet and salty trail mix with a really fantastic mix of textures and flavours... all done up in a festive fall colour scheme!

He may be basic, but I tend to go EXTRA... LOL.

Anyway, let’s look at what you’ll need to have on hand, for making your own batch of this fantastic homemade trail mix!

A bowl of homemade pumpkin spice trail mix.

    Ingredients

This recipe uses just a few simple ingredients, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding what you need in any grocery store.

We had it all covered with just a few minutes in Bulk Barn - a great option for buying ALL of our favourite ingredients for making our own homemade trail mix!

I don’t have a lot in the way of ingredient notes with this pumpkin spice trail mix recipe, beyond “use good quality ingredients!”, but here are a few more pointers:

    Pecans

You can use Pecan Halves or Pecan pieces - I like to use the halves. I think they look nicer and hold up better to the glazing process.

Also: I use unsalted nuts, which I recommend. If you use salted nuts, you might need to adjust the added salt down a bit. You don’t want an overly salty mix!

    Pumpkin Seeds

Because it’s a PUMPKIN spice trail mix, I thought it would be a good idea to include pumpkin seeds as the filler / fiber in this trail mix recipe.

So, I use two kinds: Roasted Pumpkin Seeds, and Roasted Pepitas.

By “pumpkin seeds”, I mean the white seeds - outer shell and all. Pepitas are the green inner seeds.

I use roasted, unsalted pumpkin seeds, and roasted salted pepitas.

The pumpkin seeds are part of the glazed nuts mix, so I don’t get those salted - they’ll pick up all the extra flavour they need from the spiced glaze.

I do use roasted and salted pepitas, as they’re just loose in the trail mix - not part of the glazed ingredients.

    Pumpkin Pie Spice

You can use your favourite pumpkin pie spice mix in this, whether store bought or homemade.

None on hand? No worry, you can use:

    1 tablespoon Ground Cinnamon
    1 teaspoon Ground Ginger
    ½ teaspoon Nutmeg
    ¼ teaspoon Ground Cloves

    Everything Else

Rounding out this recipe, you will need:

    Butterscotch Chips
    Golden Raisins
    Brown Sugar
    Salt

... I just don’t have anything else to add, as far as these last few trail mix ingredients go. Pretty straightforward stuff!

How to Make Homemade Pumpkin Spice Snack Mix

The full recipe is in the printable recipe card at the end of this post, here is the visual walk through!

In a large non-stick skillet, whisk together brown sugar, water, pumpkin pie spice, and salt. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.

(We tend to do this over a campfire, but you can do it over a stove!)

Once it starts to simmer, add the pecan halves and pumpkin seeds, stir well to coat the nuts and seeds.

Continue cooking, stirring constantly, until any liquid is dried up and everything is glazed.

    You want the pan DRY.

Remove from heat and spread the transfer glazed nuts and pumpkin seeds on a large baking sheet or piece of parchment paper, separating any clusters.

Once fully cool, combine with the Pepitas, Butterscotch Chips, and Raisins in a large bowl.

    Storage

Transfer to an airtight container for storage (like a large ziplock bag), or portion out into smaller containers. We’ll usually measure ½ cup amounts into snack bags.

Store in a sealed container at room temperature - out of direct sunlight - for up to 3 months.
