Have some apple fritters that are a bit on the stale side? No need to waste them, here's a fantastic Apple Fritter French Toast recipe, to give them new life!
Anyone whoโs taking that highway - going between Sault Ste Marie and Wawa - is always directed to stop there for the legendary Apple Fritters.
Weโd just visited Batchawana Bay and were continuing on to Agawa Bay Campground, Lake Superior Provincial Park, so stopped in - and the apple fritters were fantastic!
Obviously, we had to stop there again this year, while staying at Pancake Bay Provincial Park - it was actually a really convenient stop, headed back from our little field trip to Chippewa Falls.
... and on the trip back, we got some more!
The recipe development went swimmingly, so Iโve got TWO recipes to share with you - this one, and my Apple Fritter Bread Pudding.
These are both great ways to use up apple fritters that maybe arenโt the freshest... like when you buy a big box of GIANT fritters and are the only one who can eat them!
(Iโm allergic to gluten, so theyโre all his!)
This recipe is super easy to make, and a fantastic campfire breakfast when youโre on a roadtrip. You can make them with any apple fritters you like - more on that in a minute.
Anyway, letโs get to that recipe...
Ingredients
This Apple Fritter French Toast recipe uses super simple ingredients. Most of them are things we already have on hand in our camper, and all can be easily found at pretty much any grocery store!

Apple Fritters
Every time weโve made this Apple Fritter French Toast recipe so far, weโve used a single apple fritter from Voyageur Lodge.
Obviously, thatโs an incredibly specific - and generally not very accessible! - ingredient, so donโt feel beholden to it, if itโs not in reach for you.
If youโre using a smaller fritter - like Tim Hortonโs apple fritters - use two.
Either way, you want them to be a little on the stale / dry side, to better soak up the custard mixture. This will give you the best finished texture.
Milk
You can use whatever kind of milk you like with this, as long as it tastes good to you!
We tend to use Unsweetened Almond Milk - and we did on the first round or two of making these.
Later on, we made it with Oat milk - both turned out great!
Cashew Milk, Flax Milk, and Macadamia Milk are other great options.
Personally, Iโm not a fan of soy milk, but if you are - have at it.
Of course, if you have no issue with dairy milk, you can use that as well. If we hadnโt moved on to dairy-free milks, Iโd use 2% in this recipe.
Maple Syrup
Be sure to use actual Pure Maple Syrup in this recipe, rather than pancake syrup. (No, it is NOT the same!)
Personally, I like to use a Dark Maple Syrup, as the flavour comes through even more.
If youโre not a fan of maple syrup or just donโt have any on hand, the same amount of honey would work just as well.
Everything Else
Large Eggs
Pure Vanilla Extract
Ground Cinnamon (Optional)
Salt
Butter, oil, or pan spray.

How to Make Apple Fritter French Toast
The full recipe is in the printable recipe card at the end of this post; here is a pictorial walk through:
In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, maple syrup, vanilla extract, salt, and cinnamon (If using - we didnโt for this batch), set aside.
Gently place the fritter slices in the egg mixture. Allow to sit for a few minutes, then flip them and allow them to sit for another few minutes.
Melt a bit of butter in your pan, swirl a little oil, or spray generously with olive oil.
Add your soaked slices of apple fritter to the griddle or pan in a single layer.
Cook - covered - for a few minutes on each side, until golden brown and cooked through.
If your campfire is too hot / the french toast is browning too fast: remove the pan from the fire- still covered - place on the ground, and let it sit for a few minutes to finish cooking all the way through.
Serve with maple syrup and a sprinkle of cinnamon, if desired.

Equipment
- 1 cast iron pan
Ingredients
- 1 Large Apple Fritter - Stale (Use one Voyageur fritter, or two from Tim Hortons)
- ยฝ cup Milk
- 2 Large Eggs
- 1 tablespoon Maple Syrup
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- ยผ teaspoon Salt
- Pinch Ground Cinnamon Optional
- Butter oil, or pan spray.
Instructions
- Slice the apple fritter into ยพ" thick slices, set aside. (You can do this the night before to let them dry out a bit more, if you like).
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, maple syrup, vanilla extract, salt, and cinnamon (If using - we didnโt for this batch).

- Heat your griddle or a nonstick pan over medium heat - or a low campfire.
- Melt a bit of butter in your pan, swirl a little oil, or spray generously with olive oil.
- Add your soaked slices of apple fritter to the griddle or pan in a single layer.
- Cook - covered - for a few minutes on each side, until golden brown and cooked through.
